Details

The inaugural Safeguarding Symposium is designed to ensure that international school staff are up-to-date with the latest thinking in terms of child safeguarding.

The Symposium will offer all participants the opportunity to hear the keynote speakers and trainers talk about (click on the links for full details):

  • The myths about sex offenders:  What you didn’t realise you didn’t know about their motivations, thoughts and behaviours (Dr Joe Sullivan)
  • Peer-on-peer abuse: a contextual issue requiring a social response (Dr Carlene Firmin and Dr Jenny Lloyd)
  • UN Convention on the rights of the child (Ann Marie Christian)

Outline

The four expert trainers will run workshops (click on the links for full details) on:

  • Inside the minds of perpetrators of sexual crimes against children (Dr Joe Sullivan)
  • Online grooming (Dr Joe Sullivan)
  • Children and young people engaging in Problematic Sexual Behaviour (PSB) (Dr Joe Sullivan)
  • The nature and impact of peer-on-peer abuse (Dr Carlene Firmin and Dr Jenny Lloyd)
  • Responding to peer-on-peer abuse: an interactive case study exercise (Dr Carlene Firmin and Dr Jenny Lloyd)
  • Peer-on-peer abuse in schools – tools for self-auditing, planning and communicating a response to this safeguarding issue (Dr Carlene Firmin and Dr Jenny Lloyd)
  • Specific Safeguarding Issues & the role of the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) (Ann Marie Christian)
  • Thresholds of Safeguarding (Ann Marie Christian)
  • Keys for Designated Safeguarding Leads and Leaders (Ann Marie Christian)

Each of the trainers will repeat the workshops on the Sunday giving all participants the chance to attend two different workshops as well as hear all three trainers talk on their area of expertise.

Speaker/s

Dr Joe Sullivan: Dr Joe Sullivan is a registered Forensic Psychologist with the Health Professionals Council (UK) and is on the British Psychological Society (BPS) register of Chartered Psychologists.

Dr Carlene Firmin: Dr Carlene Firmin MBE is a Principal Research Fellow at the University of Bedfordshire, where she leads their Contextual Safeguarding and peer-on-peer abuse research programmes.

Dr Jenny Lloyd: Dr Jenny Lloyd is a Research Fellow at the University of Bedfordshire within the International Centre: Researching Child Sexual Exploitation, Violence and Trafficking. 

Ann Marie Christian: Ann Marie has been working within children’s services and allied settings for over 20 years. She is a qualified social worker and has been specifically involved with safeguarding in education setting for 17 years.
