What is CMS? - A web content management system or CMS is designed to simplify the publication of Web content to Web sites, in particular allowing content creators to submit content without requiring technical knowledge of HTML or the uploading of files.

Course Pre-requisite

While a basic understanding of HTML and simple database concepts would be helpful, it is not compulsory. The installation and administration of Joomla software is so user friendly, you will never need to write a single line of code or SQL statement.

Duration - 2 sessions (Saturdays) of 7 hours eachModule Overview

"Introduction to Web Planning," begins with an overview of what a content management system is, and about how they are becoming more popular because of their ease of use. Most important is our structured and organize way of Web Layout Planning, Web Structure construction. Participants will understand how Joomla templates are coded and organized.

"Administering Joomla," will guide you on the ins and outs of Joomla administration and how to set-up Joomla. In this section you will learn about content and site administration in the back-end Control Panel which includes articles, sections, categories, front-page, media, and trash management. You will learn about System administration which includes configuration, user, module, and other system management.

"Planning Content," describes how to plan your content using the Joomla Structure, set up your sections and categories, and add articles. In the Web, content is king. You will also see how to add menus to point to your content, advance article parameters.

"Joomla Extensions," explains the difference between modules, components, and plug-ins. It also looks at the default site modules such as random image, banners, syndication, and feed display. User will set up a photo gallery, learn how to stream Flash or and video from within Joomla. Here you will learn how to install and activate these products.

"Templates Modifications", here participants will learn how to modify the minor aspects of Joomla, change the logo and the sitename.

"Hosting management", introduces the participant to Cpanel system to manage their hosting. Here they learn to use the functions available like creating e-mails, auto-responders, e-mail forwarding, domain parking and many more.

"User Management" goes into detail the process of giving access rights to certain pages in the Joomla site. This component plays an important part for collaboration like when you have other users contributing articles to your site. Participants will also learn how to back up their website.

"Search Engine Optimization and Joomla," examines SEO and how it works on a Joomla site. This involves configuration, setting up titles, Meta Descriptions and Keywords, using sitemaps, extensions and using a SEF component. You will also learn about security and how to keep your Joomla site safe.

"Site Statistics," is all about web analytics. Here you will see how to work with Google Webmasters Tool. Participants will learn how to submit their site to search engines and create, submit a sitemap to Google.

The course is strictly limited to 6 or less seats per class. Please let us know if you wish to have larger attendees. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops with wireless connectivity so that they can practice at home.
